Root & Paw Apothecary

Frequently Asked Questions

Thoughtfully made herbal support should come with clear answers. Below you will find more about how Root & Paw Apothecary formulates, why we use certain ingredients and extraction methods, and what to consider before adding herbs to your dog's routine.

About Root & Paw

What is Root & Paw Apothecary?

Root & Paw is a small-batch herbal apothecary focused on thoughtfully crafted botanical support for dogs. We formulate with intention, transparency, and respect for both traditional herbalism and modern understanding of canine wellness.

What makes Root & Paw different from other pet supplements?

We do not believe in stuffing products with trendy ingredients just to make a label look impressive.

Every herb in our formulas has a purpose, a functional role, and a reason for being there. We also believe you deserve to know what is actually in your dog's products, not hide everything behind vague "proprietary blends."

Why are your formulas so transparent?

Because we think you deserve to know what you are giving your dog.

We believe trust comes from education, transparency, and intentionally crafted formulas, not mystery ingredients and marketing hype.

Safety & Use

Are your products safe for dogs?

Our formulas are created specifically with dogs in mind using herbs commonly used in traditional and veterinary herbal practice.

That said, every dog is different. We always recommend starting low, monitoring your dog's response, and consulting your veterinarian if your dog has a medical condition or takes medications.

Are you veterinarians?

No.

We are not veterinarians, and our products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Our role is to provide thoughtfully formulated herbal support products for dogs using traditional herbal principles and modern botanical research.

Can your products be used alongside medications?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on the herbs and the medications involved.

Certain herbs may interact with medications or underlying conditions, especially involving the liver, kidneys, blood pressure, or immune system. If your dog is on prescription medications, we recommend checking with your veterinarian before adding herbal products.

How long does it take to see results?

That depends on the dog and what is going on.

Some dogs respond within days, while more chronic issues may take several weeks of consistent use. Herbal support is generally more about working with the body over time rather than forcing rapid suppression of symptoms.

Tinctures & Ingredients

Why do you use alcohol in your tinctures?

Because it is one of the most effective ways to extract and preserve the beneficial compounds found in herbs.

Alcohol extracts a much broader range of plant constituents than water or glycerin alone, allowing for stronger and more concentrated herbal preparations.

Is the alcohol safe for dogs?

Yes. In the amounts used, the alcohol content per serving is very small and commonly used in herbal preparations for animals.

If preferred, you can:

  • Add the tincture to food
  • Mix it into warm water
  • Let it sit for a few minutes before serving

This helps some of the alcohol naturally evaporate.

Why not just make glycerin-based products?

Glycerin has its place, but it does not extract certain herbal compounds as effectively as alcohol.

We prioritize effectiveness and proper extraction over marketing trends. If a glycerite makes sense for a future formula, we will absolutely use it, but only when it is the best choice for the herbs involved.

Where do your herbs come from?

We source high-quality dried herbs from reputable suppliers that prioritize quality, freshness, and proper handling.

Everything is then extracted, blended, and bottled in small batches.
